Why Some People Need Credit Repair Companies

By Joshua Cooper

In cases, where individuals have defaulted on car payments or mortgages and have experienced repossession or foreclosure, credit ratings are often at the lowest level. While this is the case, there are often credit repair companies whom suggest that ratings can be repaired. While true, most often an individual can complete the same steps these companies take to repair and upgrade credit scores.

In order to comprehend how these companies work, one must understand the definition of repair. For, when fixing a report, it does not mean that actual debt which the individual accrued will be removed. Rather, it refers to removing errors on a report which are causing a rise in credit score. In some cases, duplicate or multiple reports for the same debt can be corrected in order to raise a score.

The formal dispute will often include an explanation of the error. At which time, the individual must also submit any documentation which can prove the diminished rating is a mistake. In most cases, people do not have the time or capacity to work with reporting agencies to remove these issues.

Repair companies often charge a flat fee for providing this service. As such, most often those contacting these companies are dealing with issues such as identity theft, or false charges which a past card holder may have never know about. Whereas, the most damaging marks on a report, and the most difficult to remove are those related to foreclosure and repossession.

In many cases, these companies represent individuals whom have bad credit ratings which just want to repair and update scores. While this is the case, it can often be difficult when all information on a report is legitimate. While individuals and companies can often talk to creditors and make payment arrangements, there is no guarantee a creditor will remove negative remarks from a report.

Another way to upgrade a credit score, is if there is a collection account that has been sold to a different collector. For, when this is the case, the same information can often be listed several times. Whether an individual, or company provides information in relation to these multiple listings, most often a reporting agency will remove all collection agencies to whom the debt is longer owed.

If there are items on a report which do not match past purchases, or appear to be in error, it is important to contact the merchant and card company immediately. For, either of these entities can often be of assistance in getting negative marks which are in error removed from a report. Whereas, if there are negative marks related to items which have been paid off, it is important to contact the company and repair company to have the situation resolved, then removed from the report.

Most individuals can obtain enough information by running a free report to obtain the information needed to clean up a report. When doing so, if there is activity the individual does not feel is correct, it is important to notify the reporting agency as soon as possible. For, if there is a chance it is related to identity theft, the sooner this type of fraud is caught, the better.
