The Benefits Realized From Supply Chain Optimization

By Matthew Jackson

The supply chain is a term that refers to the players and processes involved in moving a product from the manufacturer to the wholesaler, the retailer and eventually the end consumer. The number of intermediaries (and hence the complexity of the system), depends on the nature of the business. Supply chain optimization is a process by which the efficiency of the system is improved systematically to the satisfaction of all the players.

It is important to be aware of the constantly changing business environment. The traditional business was designed to operate independently and was capable of handling manufacturing, marketing and supply of products to consumers. Today, the ways of doing business have become very complex and there is a need to have partners that help in creating efficiency in every aspect of the business. Clear communication channels are required for this to be realized.

The starting point should be to set targets for the firm. There is a need to institute monitoring and evaluation activities so as to assess whether any progress is being made. Enough time should be set aside for the various interventions to be put in place. One of first interventions that need to be considered is the setting up of IT infrastructure. The teams responsible for implementing the various strategies need to be properly trained from the onset.

IT infrastructure provides a platform on which the relevant software can be operated. Such software will increase the efficiency by eliminating delays, making it easy for partner companies to communicate and reducing the operating costs. This is done through incorporation of mathematical modelling techniques. The end result of these efforts is better returns to the firm.

Mobile technology is another trend shaping the market and one should be able to embrace readily. The technology has also brought a lot of flexibility in the supply chain resulting in a reduction in delays of product delivery. Mobile devices are useful in product marketing, management of field sales and in the provision of products to consumers. Product information such as content, origin and method of manufacture can be easily transmitted from the producer to the consumer.

Efficiency can only be ensured if the demand of products is matched by the production. This can only happen if the demand for the goods being produced is accurately predicted. One of the ways of achieving this is by studying historical data on the demand for the product in question. It is also useful to anticipate future events that may affect this demand. There should be efforts to collect aggregated data relating to groups of consumers and types of products.

The chain has different parts and problems may affect all these aspects or just a few. You can determine which areas need improvement by conducting an analysis of your strengths and weaknesses. Outsourcing some of the services that you offer may be needed to bring balance to the rest of the chain. There are many logistics companies willing to help in one or more areas.

There are many advantages associated with optimizing the activities in a supply chain. Reduction of operation costs and increased efficiency are among the most significant. Due to better predictability of the market, suppliers are able to keep up with the demands of consumers. Another benefit is that fact that the players that are involved in the process learn to cooperate with each other which results into better customer service.
