The Manufacturing Of Sterling Silver Handmade Jewelry

By Frances Baker

A handmade jewelry is a type of jewelry which is being assembled and is formed with using the hands rather than using the typical machines used for production. This type is made from many kinds of materials and the production is being applied with many different kinds of techniques. One of the most common types of materials which is being used in the production is the sterling silver.

Sterling silver is a silver alloy which contains a 92.5 percent of silver weight and a 7.5 percent of other metals weight, most commonly is copper. That standard often has minimum 925 millesimal fineness. There are other metals which may replace a copper which are being utilized in order to improve the various properties of a sterling silver handmade jewelry like eliminating the fire scale, increasing the resistance to the tarnish, and reducing the casting porosity.

All of the natural parts or components need to undergo all the certain processes. And because these are considered as unique product, there is a need for its production to be given with enough time together with necessary skills. The next paragraphs will be giving you information about the manufacturing chain processes.

First is to buy the stones and silver. To buy the right set is considered very important. It is one expensive type of investment, so it must be considered properly before purchasing. Types of these are bought in different sizes and weight, so to know about these is very important as well before purchasing. Also, make sure that you are gaining the availability of best materials.

Second, designing the jewelry. All things are being made and started with concepts and these are considered as the rough design when it comes to the minds of designers. These concepts and drawings are being uses by model makers as reference for the creation of an original piece. Creating the design can be very passionate alchemy but can be difficult as well.

Third is the molding of products. If master pieces are already done, these will now be used for creating high technology mold which will also be used for creating the jewelry in wax reproduction. If all final details are already sketched, these are passed to the section of molding. Professional molders in this section will be turning products from sketches to molds.

Fourth, casting the product. The metallic piece may be unique. An example for this is a customized engagement ring which will be used for rubber molds and this may be produced by a low wax casting. The shape is shaped initially using wax or may be made of metal having a scale of 1.05 for slightly reducing the dimensions of metal piece.

Fifth, setting up the stones. This involves the attachment of precious stones or gems. This step involves two common techniques. One is prong or claw setting which uses prongs which are being folded over the girdle to secure the stone. Two is bezel setting in which a bezel will surround the stone. It is folded over its perimeter to secure it from its underside.

Sixth is polishing and the checking of quality. Two types for polishing are chemical and mechanical polishing. Mechanical polishing uses cotton or felt disc that is dipped into the abrasive compounds for polishing surfaces. While chemical polishing is not suggested for use because of some risks in production. All pieces will then be checked by an experienced worker for defects and quality.
